Primal Fear is a 1996 American legal thriller film directed by Gregory Hoblit and starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Edward Norton, and Frances McDormand. The film tells the story of a defense attorney who defends an altar boy accused of murder. Edward Norton's performance as the accused altar boy earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film was a commercial success and received generally positive reviews from critics. It was also praised for its twist ending. Primal Fear was based on a novel of the same name by William Diehl.
